With all of the NSA revelations about storing meta data on millions of Americans and a new report showing the mishaps and ineffective surveillance in thwarting off terror. Americans are starting to become more suspicious of their government. And to top that off, Google (the worlds largest search engine and collector of personal data)has already been involved in smart appliances and of recently has purchased Boston Dynamics (Leader in Robotics working closely with the Pentagon) and Nest (Provider of smart thermosats and smoke alarms). Has brought up much concern with many that our government has over stepped it's boundaries in to the private lives of it's citizens.
Something most people might have forgotten about is the expansion of the National Emergency Alert System that puts the control of the issuing in the hands of the POTUS. This may not be as much of a concern as the NSA revelations to most people, but a recent text message sent to Ukrainain protesters might shed light on future protest in America! Accordind to a report out of the NY Times:
"The government’s opponents said three recent actions had been intended to incite the more radical protesters and sow doubt in the minds of moderates: the passing of laws last week circumscribing the right of public assembly, the blocking of a protest march past the Parliament building on Sunday and the sending of cellphone messages on Tuesday to people standing in the vicinity of the fighting that said, “Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass disturbance.” "
This showing the capability of governments to use technology to track and target it's citizens. Not to mention people in the area not apart of the protest may have also become targets. With much of this technology being used by governments many people tend to wonder if there is a such thing as privacy in a society that relies on technology that contains the ability to spy.
But there is hope in sight due to states taking charge and working to introduce legislation to re-enforce the 4th Amendment as State Senator Stacey Campfield (R) and State Representative Andy Holt (R) of Tennesse has Recently done! This along with states nullifying federal laws show that many don't buy in to the fed's approach of give me your liberty, in exchange for safety! One group that was a major part of drafting and lobbiied for the "Tennessee Fourth Amendment Protection Act" was the Tenth Amendment Center, which has been working around the country to help citizens lobby and pass nullification. Get involved and find out what your local and state representatives are doing to protect your rights!
